Wether you are buying a brand new cot or a second hand cot we've put together some important safety information for you to bear in mind, make sure that headboard or the footboard doesn't have decorative cutouts that could trap your baby's limbs, also make sure that the corner posts don't have decorative extensions that your baby's clothes could get caught on. Make sure that the cot bars are between 25mm (1 inch) and 65mm (2.5 inches) apart so that your baby can't get stuck between the bars of the cot. Also make sure it's deep enough to prevent your baby climbing out when they get more mobile. So that means you need at least 50cm (20 inches) between the top of the mattress and the top of the cot side. All mattresses sold in the UK should conform to BS EN 716.
