It's important to keep the umbilical cord as clean, and as dry as possible. You can get some newborn nappies that have a 'U' shape cut out of them that fits underneath the cord so you can get as much air to it as possible.

If you haven't got a nappy like this, you can just simply fold down the nappy underneath the cord.

If you've got any concerns at all about infection, make sure you contact the midwife, or health visitor as soon as possible.
