snacks before bed | guest blog with itsy
Whilst your little one snoozes, they’re growing, processing today’s adventures, and recharging ready for tomorrow (so coffee at the ready!) With this in mind, we’ve popped together our favourite, fool proof nutritious bedtime snacks that will not only help to give a happy lights out, but a sounder sleep for all.
- Wholegrain toast with peanut butter
Carbohydrate rich foods containing the natural sleep inducing chemical tryptophan are a delicious and easy way of avoiding sugary cereals and sweet cookies. Add peanut butter for a boost in magnesium, iron, and zinc, as well as B and E vitamins.
- Apples and cheese
Apples are a fantastic natural source of potassium, vitamin C and antioxidants, and are an excellent self-feeding choice for little ones (just cut into small slices) . Team with cheese rich in calcium and healthy fats and you’ve got yourself a winning combo!
- Porridge Fingers
Make your usual porridge but give it a few minutes in the oven to make gooey oaty fingers. Oats are high in soluble fibre which is gentle on digestion and great for preventing constipation. Mix in a few sweet berries for extra antioxidants – and save some for the morning too!
- Banana Roll Ups
Fun, SO quick to make (the little ones can help!) and packed full of slow releasing carbohydrates, these wraps are a great alternative to sandwiches whilst increasing the heart health. Bingo.
- Boiled Eggs
Eggs are widely recognised as a high quality protein source with amino acids that are linked to better sleep quality. Oh, and apparently these make you feel more ‘rested’ upon awakening (let’s pray hey?)
What are your favourite snacks to give your little ones before they rest their sleepy heads?
